Through Helix’s drug distribution division Rivex Pharma, the product Monovisc™ is distributed in Canada based on an agreement with Anika Therapeutics Inc. Monovisc™ (sodium hyaluronate) reduces joint pain and improves joint mobility providing significant relief from the pain of osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee and has been especially formulated for single-injection procedures. Monovisc™ supplements the synovial fluid to naturally augment lubrication, cushioning and offer protection to the arthritic knee joint.
Monovisc™ is injected using a simple procedure called viscsupplementation. The procedure is performed by an orthopaedic surgeon, rheumatologist, or other qualified health professional. The doctor prepares the patient's knee with a local anesthetic, then injects Monovisc™ directly into the knee joint where it combines with the synovial fluid. Monovisc™ acts only in the knee joints, so it will not interfere with any other medications the patient is taking 1.
For many patients, relief of osteoarthritic discomfort begins immediately. Full benefit is achieved after one simple treatment.
Significant pain reduction from OA of the knee can last up to 6 months2. Patients will enjoy enhanced joint mobility and joint protection. Patients will be able to resume many of the activities they once enjoyed.
